Mrs. Bullis’s Social Studies Class
Welcome back! We are going to have a fantastic year. It is important that everyone reads and understands my classroom philosophy. If everyone abides by this, it will help the year progress smoothly and successfully.
Our Classroom Philosophy
Our classroom is a community; we must all work together to make that community succeed. We are capable learners, will work as a team, and cooperate with each other while following the classroom rules. We will be respectful of others and others property and will not insult our classmates. Our classroom is a place of learning, growth, cooperation, and support. We will work as a team to help each other further our education.
Classroom Rules
1. Respect all people and property of room 214
2. Be responsible.
3. Be safe
If you choose to break the rules:
If a student chooses to break a rule, a fair consequence will be given. Because every situation is different, the consequence will depend upon the severity of the action. I will decide upon the proper action to be taken given the circumstances. The following is a general, tentative plan of action:
· First time-classroom intervention
· Second time- contact home either through email or a phone call
· Third time- discussion/referral to a counselor or Detention
· Fourth time- meeting with the parents
· Fifth time-Referral to Administrator
Serious or repeat offenses will be sent immediately to the office.
Tardies;
I will follow the District 3-5-7 Tardy Policy. Please see the Student Code of Conduct for an explanation.
Citizenship grades:
1= Outstanding
2= Satisfactory
3= Needs improvement
Citizenship will be based on the student’s ability to follow the classroom rules, their participation in class, and on their tardies.
Grading:
Assessments (Test, quizzes, projects, long term assignments)= 75%
Daily Assignments = 25%
Student will be given notice as to how the assignments/assessments are weighted.
Each assignment will be given a percentage grade that will be entered into PowerSchool. The following is a break down of the letter grades:
100-98% A+
97-93% A
92-90% A-
89-87% B+
86-83% B
82-80% B-
79-77% C+
76-73% C
72-70% C-
69-67% D+
66-63% D
62-60% D-
59-50% E *Indicates the student has made significant effort, but
has not reached mastery of the course content
49-0% F *Indicates the student has not made the effort to reach
mastery of the course content
If you would like to access your grades online, you can do so through PowerSchool. Please allow enough time for entering the grades into PowerSchool. If you do not see a grade posted within two weeks of the time the assignment was due or a test was taken, please contact me.
Daily Assignment policy:
Assignments are an important of the learning process. When it is assigned, every student is expected to complete it fully and return it at the designated time. Many of our assignments will be checked together in class so the students can receive instant feedback and ask questions if they need to.
Late work:
If a student turns in an assignment late, that assignment will be given a 70%. If a student has chronic late/missing assignments, that student will be dealt with on an individual basis. Students will not be allowed to turn in assessments late.
If absent:
If a student is absent it is their responsibility to get the assignments missed. Grissom's policy allows double the time the student was absent to complete missing work. There will be an absent file where the students can find any assignments that were given while they were gone. There will also be an assignment notebook which will have the agenda for each day. By checking the assignment notebook, the student will know exactly what they’ve missed in class on the day(s) they were out.
In addition, students who are absent on the day of a test are expected to make up the test the day they return to school. This also applies to assignments/projects that are due on the day a student is absent. The projects/assignments are to be turned in on the day the student returns to class; otherwise it will be considered late. Remember, it is the student’s responsibility to turn in any work that was collected on the day(s) they were absent.
Agendas:
Students are encouraged to bring and use an agenda everyday. The class agenda will be on the board everyday for the students to copy into their agenda. Students should also place the dates of tests/quizzes, as well as project due dates, in their agenda ahead of time.
Passes
In order to leave the classroom that student must have their agenda and their I.D. with them. In addition, students must sign in and out on the pass log when leaving the room for any reason.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in NO CREDIT for the assignment/quiz/test. Plagiarism includes copying from any book, the Internet, a fellow student, or any other source. If you are caught cheating a parent will be notified.
Talking during a test/quiz
There will be no talking during a quiz or test until I announce the test or quiz is over. If you choose to talk, you choose to earn a zero. This applies to those who are finished with their test as well. It is encouraged to bring a silent reading book on test days.
Student I.D.:
Students are expected to wear their I.D. at all times during the school day and for after school activities.
*Students and parents will receive an addendum to these course expectations if Mrs. Bullis deems it necessary to make any modification during the school year.
If there are any questions, please feel free to contact me.
